The People Tree Sessions
(1998)

The 1998 release, The People Tree Sessions, was recorded by Emit Bloch and Milla Jovovich during several late night sessions at Emit Bloch's apartment in the Hollywood Hills.

Before issuance, it was remixed in a San Francisco apartment on Haight Street by D.Elder, who is now known for Noise Music. Issued originally on Bloch's People Tree Recordings, hence the name, the release at first circulated only in small record shops in Los Angeles and received some airplay on community and pirate radio stations. A copy fell into the hands of The Dust Brothers who remixed "Queen Of the Parade" to make "Queen Electric", one of the more recognizable tracks from the sessions. "The People Tree Sessions" is now regarded as a classic of home-made electronic music and of lo-fi folk music.

The release has provoked heated debate (see Amazon.com reference) with some listeners rating its intimacy and musical style and others reviling its sound quality and incomplete, unpolished songs. Shortly after its original issuance, Jovovich and Bloch disputed about the releases' legitimacy, much of their debate showing up online as Jovovich, who was filming The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc at the time, attempted to quell the spread of the release over the nascent Internet and Bloch vied for its artistic merit and its legitimacy. Legal action was never taken and Cherry Red Records now issue the remastered CD version of the sessions.

In 2000, The People Tree Sessions was chosen as the 'CD of the Week' and given 4/5 stars by the Guardian newspaper, who called it "so barking, it's great".
